History Center releases digital real estate records

Share

The History Center in Cedar Rapids has launched an initiative to digitize and make accessible online its extensive collection of real estate records. The archive includes photographs of homes and businesses sold between 1950 and 1990, providing a valuable resource for researchers and the public.

The project, led by Advantage Archives, is funded by a grant from the Linn County Historic Preservation Commission. The first phase of the project will make 15,000 records available online, with more being added weekly. These records, which were originally created for real estate listings, include details on square footage, building materials, ownership history, and available appliances and utilities at the time of sale.

The digitization of these records aims to enhance public access and interest in the area’s architectural and historical heritage. Previously, access to these records required in-person appointments or online requests with a research fee. Now, the public can freely explore the community’s development and the evolution of local residences and businesses through the online archive. This initiative aligns with the History Center’s mission to preserve and share local stories, connecting people to the history of Linn County.
